Xinyang Maojian is famous for its unique appearance and robust character, which sets it apart from other green teas. Its high status comes from its rich flavor and the beautiful "hairy" buds.

  • Appearance: The dry leaves are thin, firm, and tightly rolled with both ends pointed, giving them the name "hairy tips" (Maojian). They are covered in abundant, fine white hairs and have a slightly dark-green color .

  • Aroma: It offers a fresh, high, and long-lasting fragrance, with a signature roasted chestnut aroma that is both prominent and inviting .

  • Flavor: The taste is refreshingly brisk, full-bodied, and sweet, with a long-lasting, sweet aftertaste (known as huigan) . It is known for its strength and clean finish, without the bitterness found in lesser green teas.

  • Liquor: The brewed tea yields a clear, bright green to yellowish-green liquid .

Brewing Guide

To fully enjoy the complex flavors of Xinyang Maojian, proper brewing is essential. The leaves are tender, so care with temperature is key.

  1. Water Temperature: 80°C - 85°C (176°F - 185°F) . Do not use boiling water, as it will scorch the delicate leaves and create a bitter taste.

  2. Tea Leaves: Use about 3 grams (about 1-1.5 teaspoons) of tea leaves per 150ml of water (a 1:50 ratio). You can use up to 5 grams if you prefer a stronger brew .

  3. Vessel: A transparent glass cup or a porcelain gaiwan is ideal for appreciating the tea's color and the way the leaves unfurl .

  4. Method:

    • Rinse the cup with hot water to warm it.

    • Place the tea leaves in the cup.

    • Add the hot water and steep for 1-3 minutes . For a traditional method, try the "middle pouring" technique: fill the cup 1/3 full, add the tea, wait a moment to let the leaves absorb the water, and then fill the cup completely .

  5. Re-steeping: This tea is excellent for multiple infusions. For subsequent brews, increase the steeping time slightly. The leaves can be steeped 2-3 times .

Storage Instructions

Green tea is delicate and can lose its freshness quickly if not stored correctly. To preserve the quality of your tea:

  • Airtight: Always store in a sealed, airtight container to prevent oxidation and moisture absorption .

  • Cool & Dark: Keep it in a cool, dry, and dark place, away from direct sunlight and strong odors .

  • Refrigeration: For long-term storage, refrigeration is best. Keep it in the refrigerator at 0-5°C and ensure the package is completely sealed to prevent the tea from absorbing other food odors
