Dragon Well is famous for its distinctive flat, smooth leaves and its unique, umami-rich flavor. Its high status comes from its perfect balance of aroma and taste.
-
Appearance: The dry leaves are flat, straight, and smooth, resembling orchid petals or small blades. The color is a characteristic pale green mixed with yellow, not a vivid, bright green. This signals a high-quality, authentic roast .
-
Aroma: It offers a soothing and delicate fragrance, often with a distinct toasted chestnut or roasted bean aroma, balanced with fresh, sweetgrass notes . Higher grades often have a lingering orchid scent .
-
Flavor: The taste is refreshing, clean, and delicately sweet, with a smooth, buttery finish and no bitterness when brewed correctly. This unique character is why it is often called the "gentleman" of Chinese teas .
-
Liquor: The brewed tea yields a clear, light green to yellow-green liquid.
Brewing Guide
To fully enjoy the subtle flavors of Dragon Well tea, proper brewing is essential.
-
Water Temperature: 75°C - 85°C (167°F - 185°F) . Do not use boiling water, as it will scorch the delicate leaves and create bitterness .
-
Tea Leaves: Use about 3-5 grams (1-2 teaspoons) of tea leaves per cup .
-
Vessel: A transparent glass cup or a porcelain gaiwan is recommended to appreciate the color and the way the leaves unfurl .
-
Method:
-
Rinse the cup with hot water to warm it.
-
Place the tea leaves in the cup.
-
Add a small amount of hot water, swirl gently to "wake" the leaves, and take in the aroma.
-
Fill the cup with hot water and steep for 1-3 minutes. For the best experience, you can also use the "top-up" method: pour water until the cup is 1/3 full, wait a moment, and then fill it completely .
-
-
Re-steeping: This tea is excellent for multiple infusions. For subsequent brews, increase the steeping time slightly. The leaves can be steeped 2-3 times .
Storage Instructions
Green tea is delicate and can lose its freshness quickly if not stored correctly. To preserve the quality of your tea:
-
Airtight: Always store in a sealed, airtight container (like the tin-foil bag provided) to prevent oxidation and moisture absorption .
-
Cool & Dark: Keep it in a cool, dry, and dark place, away from direct sunlight and strong odors .
-
Refrigeration: For long-term storage, refrigeration is best. Keep it in the refrigerator at 0-5°C and ensure the package is completely sealed to prevent the tea from absorbing other food odors
